The Spring Lake Youth Academy serves 30 males, ages 15 to 18, who have mental health disorders and related maladaptive behaviors, in a non-secure residential program. The program provides mental health overlay services (MHOS) and substance abuse treatment services for each youth as appropriate.

The program provides mental health and behavioral health services in group settings and through individual counseling. In addition, youth receive clinical and case management services, individual, family and group therapeutic interventions, treatment team development, behavior management, human growth and development, life skills, and specialized community re-entry preparedness.

The philosophy of treatment encompasses program goals based upon the youth’s ability to demonstrate an understanding of and identify alternatives to delinquent patterns of thinking.  Treatment also helps the youth understand the impact of his crime on victims and the community while helping the youth identify a plan for success.  The evidence-based treatment services provided for residents include: "Skillstreaming the Adolescent;" Living in Balance;" "Thinking, Feeling, Behaving;" "Young Men's Work;" and "Impact of Crime."

The Spring Lake Youth Academy is committed to the balanced approach of restorative justice that emphasizes accountability, competency development, and public safety.

The anticipated, average length of stay is between three and nine months, depending on the youth's pace of success in completing his individualized treatment plan and goals. Clothing and uniforms are provided by the program.

The Spring Lake Youth Academy is a Type 1 program offering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading. Career and technical opportunities include a Water Resource Management course that is integrated with Environmental Science.

Education services are provided through a contract with the DeSoto County School District.
