The Gulf Academy is a hardware secure, moderate-risk, 29-bed residential and intensive mental health program for male juvenile offenders. The program employs cognitive-behavioral treatment and evidence-based programs where youth receive intensive mental health group services seven (7) days per week including individual and family counseling by qualified therapists under the direct supervision of a licensed professional. A licensed psychiatrist completes psychiatric assessments, and also provides monthly follow ups. Eligible youth must have a DSM-IV diagnosis above and beyond conduct disorder and oppositional defiance disorder, including GAF scores ranging from 30 to 60. Youth currently experiencing hallucinations, delusions, or who are actively suicidal are not eligible for this program.

The Gulf Academy also serves males that may be classified as needing intensive medical overlay services. The ability to accept these youth is based on bed availability. The scope of medical services provided includes insulin dependent diabetics, renal disease, sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS, heart disease, etc. (to be approved by the Office of Health Services prior to admission). Medical services not provided are intravenous therapy, gastric tube maintenance (including feeding tubes), skilled observation treatments required more than every 2 hours, medical conditions determined to be acute and emergent in nature, stage 3 and stage 4 open wounds, and contagious infectious diseases. The anticipated average length of stay is 9 to 12 months. Clothing and uniforms are provided by the program.

Gulf Academy (school number 514181) is a Type 1 program offering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and one elective course.

Education services are provided through the Pinellas County School District.

Traveling South on 49th street the facility is located just across the Bayside bridge. Traveling North on 49th street the facility is located on the left, immediately past the Pinellas County Courthouse.
The building itself is shared by three service providers, Gulf and Lake Academy is located on the North side of the building in the back.
