The Gulf Academy serves 56 males, ages 12 to 19, in a non-secure residential commitment program that provides intensive mental health services.  The program employs cognitive-behavioral treatment and evidence-based programs where youth receive intensive mental health group services seven (7) days a week, including individual and family counseling by qualified therapists under the direct supervision of a licensed professional.  A licensed psychiatrist completes psychiatric assessments, and provides monthly follow ups.

Eligible youth must have a DSM-IV diagnosis above and beyond conduct disorder and oppositional defiance disorder, including GAF scores ranging from 30 to 60. Youth currently experiencing hallucinations, delusions, or who are actively suicidal are not eligible for this program.

The Gulf Academy also serves males who may be classified as needing intensive medical overlay services. The ability to accept these youth is based on bed availability. The scope of medical services provided includes insulin dependent diabetics, renal disease, sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS, heart disease, etc. (to be approved by the Office of Health Services prior to admission). Medical services not provided are intravenous therapy, gastric tube maintenance (including feeding tubes), skilled observation treatments required more than every 2 hours, medical conditions determined to be acute and emergent in nature, stage 3 and stage 4 open wounds, and contagious infectious diseases.

The anticipated average length of stay is between nine months and one year, depending on the youth's pace of success in completing his individualized treatment plan and goals.

The Gulf Academy is a Type 2 program offering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Physical Education and Career Courses, as well as vocational certification programs.

Education services are provided by G4S education staff under contract with the St. Johns County School District.
