The Broward Girls Academy is a 30-bed residential program for low-risk and moderate-risk girls, ages 14 to 19, who are committed to the Department after being assessed and classified with serious-to-severe mental disturbance. Program services include mental health group, individual and family counseling, and psychiatric and psychological counseling.
The program also provides the "Girls Moving On" curriculum that focuses on responsivity issues for female delinquents. The structured program overview provides the girls with alternatives to criminal activity by helping them learn to identify and mobilize both personal and community resources. The program is based on an educational and cognitive skills-building approach and can be delivered over 9 to 13 weeks in small groups or on an individual basis by trained correctional practitioners.
Additionally, the program offers "Introduction to Cosmetology" vocational training services through the Beauty Schools of America (BSA). The BSA curriculum provides professional training in the latest theoretical and practical techniques, as well as the latest approaches released to the cosmetology industry. The anticipated average length of stay in the program for a low-risk commitment is 3 to 6 months and for a moderate-risk commitment is 6 to 9 months.
Broward Girls Academy (school number 66015) is a Type 1 program offering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and one elective course. The elective course is typically used to provide additional reading assistance to needy students or vocational training.
Education and vocational services are provided through the Broward County School District.
