  • With the 2013 Legislative Session over, we are moving full-steam ahead with our next Roadmap meeting. We are scheduled to be in Fort Myers during the last week of May where we will hold a meeting for stakeholders and public town hall meeting.

  • Florida’s 2013 Legislative Session is scheduled to adjourn today. The final day of Session brought one more legislative victory to our agency as the DJJ’s Boards & Councils legislation (House Bill 617) received the support of the Florida Legislature after final passage in the Senate.

  • Did you know Florida was the first state to make it a felony to not report child abuse? This is especially important because it is estimated that one in three girls and one in five boys are the victims of sexual abuse.

  • CHILDREN’S WEEK/DJJ YOUTH SUCCESS DAY: On April 8, I was honored to serve as the guest speaker at the Children’s Week Awards dinner. It was a perfect opportunity to share our message that preventing children from entering the juvenile justice system is critical; therefore, prevention must be a part of every aspect of the juvenile justice.

  • This was a short week in the legislature with legislative meetings being held only on Wednesday and Thursday. SB 676 by Sen. Greg Evers & HB 617 by Rep. Ray Pilon -- Juvenile Justice Circuit Advisory Boards and Juvenile Justice County Councils passed the Senate Judiciary and House Local and Federal Affairs committees, respectively, on March 27.

  • I spent the first two of days of this week in San Francisco at The Council of State Governments Justice Center’s School Discipline Consensus Project. This is a year-long effort to develop what will be proposed as national policy.

  • “It’s working,” was Gov. Rick Scott’s message in his State of the State Address to the 2013 Legislature on the opening day of session, March 5. Florida’s economy has successfully rebounded after two years of hard work by legislators, and Florida is projected to have a budget surplus for the first time in six years.

  • ROADMAP UPDATE: Last week, while I was in the Panhandle for Roadmap to System Excellence meetings in Bay and Escambia counties, I visited the staff and youth at the Pensacola Boys Base, the Escambia Regional Juvenile Detention Center (RJDC) and the PACE Center for girls in Pensacola.

  • This week I led the ninth and tenth Roadmap to System Excellence meetings in Panama City (Wednesday) and Pensacola (Thursday) since we launched the Roadmap in November. Roadmap Town Hall and stakeholder meetings have so far attracted more than one thousand citizens to learn more about juvenile justice reform.

  • After a brief hiatus for the holidays, the Panhandle is the next stop for Roadmap to System Excellence Town Hall meetings. On Wednesday, Jan. 30 I will be at the Bay County Government Center and on Thursday, Jan. 31 I will be in Escambia County at the John and Paul Amos Performance Studio, Building 23, Pensacola State College.
