DJJ Encourages Floridians to “Get Kids Back-to-School Ready” and Save Money!

2013 Sales Tax Holiday to take place August 2 thru August 4

Tallahassee, Fla. – The new school year is right around the corner and the Department of Juvenile Justice is reminding parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and community members to make sure Florida students start the year right by taking advantage of the 2013 Sales Tax Holiday this weekend, Aug. 2 – 4.

Research shows that children and teens who stay in school are less likely to touch the juvenile justice system. In fact, having problems at school is considered a major risk factor for criminal offending.

“The key protective factor to keeping kids out of the criminal justice system is education, and being prepared is critical to academic success,” DJJ Secretary Wansley Walters said. “I have such fond memories of school with my daughter; she loved have fresh notebooks and crayons and I felt such a sense of pride knowing she had the tools she needed to have a great school year. As we prepare to start another school year, I urge all Florida residents to make sure the children in their lives have the tools they need to thrive.”

For the first time this year, computers and computer accessories priced $750 or less have been included. These items along with clothing, footwear and certain school supplies will be exempt from state and local option sales tax. A complete list of items can be accessed by visiting the Current Topics section of the Department of Revenue website (http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/) or by scanning the QR code with a smartphone.
