West Florida Wilderness Institute (WFWI) is a 40-bed residential, environmentally secure moderate-risk facility for males ages 14-18. The average length of stay is from 6 to 9 months. WFWI provides a balanced level of education and life experiences in an effort to redirect a youth’s decision-making skills. WFWI provides a complete education environment, Restorative Justice, group and individual counseling, Behavioral Health Overlay Services (BHOS), as well as, numerous life experience projects. Youth participate in various off-campus activities such as the Marine Institute Olympics, hiking out of state mountain trails and track events. To fully participate in this program, youth must be in good physical health.

West Florida Wilderness Institute (school number 303012) is a Type 2 program offering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and one elective course. The elective course is typically used to provide additional reading assistance to needy students or vocational training.

Education and vocational services are provided through the Holmes County School District. 

From Tallahassee, travel I-10 west to Hwy 81, exit 96. Take Hwy 81 North to Hwy 90. Turn right (east) onto Hwy 90. Cross the bridge and turn right (south) onto Hwy 181-C. Make a left on the first dirt road after crossing I-10 (Old Mt. Zion Rd.). Approximately 5 miles on right will be WFWI. Holmes
