Spring Lake Youth Academy provides treatment for low-risk males, ages 15 to 18, with mental health disorders and related maladaptive behaviors. This program provides Mental Health Overlay Services (MHOS) and Behavioral Health Overlay Services (BHOS). Group and individual counseling is provided. Located on the Peace River, the program uses environmental factors in the delivery of services. The youth study ecosystem ecology; how human actions impact the ecologic balance; environmental responsibility; horticulture education that includes organic and non-organic growing methodologies and consideration for butterfly and plant partners in evolution; fish and wildlife conservation; the discovery of Florida fossils; animal, fish and plant husbandry; ropes course training; outdoor experiential survival that may include camping, backpacking, outdoor cooking, and rope knotting; and building trails and bridges. Educational services are provided by the program’s teachers. Youth must be physically able to participate in the program. The average length of stay is 60-90 days.
