PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Bristol Youth Academy is a staff-secure
moderate-risk program for males between the
ages of 14 and 18 that uses a psycho-educational
cognitive behavioral model. The average length of
stay is between 6 to 9 months. It uses a holistic
wellness approach that builds on the assets of the
youth and develops individual strengths. The
program emphasizes the restoration of good
relationships between the youth and his own view
of himself, those who support him, his family, and
the community. The program is divided into five
distinct phases and the youth must complete all
phases in order to graduate from the program.
This unit of the Academy provides behavioral health
overlay services (BHOS), psycho educational groups,
anger management, victim awareness, social skills,
moral development, and gang intervention. A
12-bed Specialized Unit provides individualized
mental health and substance abuse services designed
specifically for youth with borderline developmental
disabilities. Youth in this unit must have a
documented IQ within the 70-75 range. Another
unit provides a 24-bed Substance Abuse program that
is designed to treat youth with a primary substance
abuse diagnosis. Education and vocational
services are provided by the Liberty County Public
School System, including the General Education
Diploma (GED). All youth are provided
individual clothing when they enter the program.
