Juvenile Justice Boards and Councils

How the county councils and circuit boards work

The Florida legislature authorized juvenile justice councils at the county level and established circuit juvenile justice boards. Each county council appoints representatives to serve on the circuit board. The county councils and circuit boards serve as advisors to the Department of Juvenile Justice. Members of the boards and councils work closely with Delinquency Prevention Specialist and the Community Partnership Coordinators to plan for services that meet the identified needs of juveniles and families within the local community.

Boards and councils primarily focus on juvenile delinquency prevention programs and services such as mentoring, teen courts, neighborhood accountability boards, partnership programs, after-school programs and public forums.

Florida Statutes, 985.664 Juvenile justice circuit boards and juvenile justice county councils.

County Councils

The county councils were created to ensure broad community participation. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend county council meetings. Each county council includes but not limited to: members of the local school district, the board of county commissioners, local elected officials, local law enforcement, the judicial system, the business community, social service providers, the faith community, victim service programs and victims of crime, Department of Children and Families, Department of Corrections, other interested officials and groups, including students, parents, children’s services councils and public or private providers of juvenile justice programs.

Circuit Boards

Each circuit board is composed of representatives chosen by the juvenile justice county councils within the circuit. The county councils appoint members to the circuit board.

Members of the circuit board must include the state attorney, the public defender and the chief judge of the circuit.
